Stolpen Castle

This morning we took the bus through to Stolpen to visit Burg Stolpen. It is built on a base of basalt left behind after a volcanic eruption. It’s most famous for being the prison of Anna Constantia Countess von Cosel, who spent almost 50 years there.

It was a leisurely walk up from the bus stop to the castle. There is quite a lot to see. There was even a room filled with torture equipment including a rack. One of the towers was under restoration but we could still go inside it was just not possible to see much from the inside out due to scaffolding and cover sheeting. Fortunately there were other towers and vantage points from which to capture a panoramic view of the city and surrounding landscape.

We stopped for waffles at a small cafe just below the castle and then had a walk around the perimeter. We wandered through the town before catching the bus back. All in all an easy Sunday excursion.
